As we’re using Norfolk Cordial as one of our suppliers, I decided to find out exactly how the company was created. Who would have thought that you could put “luxury”, “sophisticated” and “cordial” all in the same sentence? Well John McFarlane, who set up the company in 2011, decided that was exactly what he was going to do. His inspiration came from meeting his girlfriend Georgie, who also works for Norfolk Cordial. She didn’t like the taste of alcohol and found that most soft drinks were designed for kids rather than adults. In other words, they had ‘fake/bubble-gum’ flavours, were designed to be overly sweet drinks, with rather nasty ingredients (a kids paradise right!).
Well John couldn’t resist the challenge, being a creator and entrepreneur at heart, and certainly had his work cut out for him. He wanted to use only natural ingredients, in order to produce a first rate flavoursome cordial, bursting with goodness. He managed to find one of the largest IQF fruit producers in England, just on our back doorstep in Tunstead, which produces some of the best soft fruits in the country.
This company, called Place UK, which has been around for about 60 years, doesn’t compromise on quality, and is well reputed for its delicious flavours and innovation. Combine this with handpicked elderflowers from other Norfolk farms and he had a recipe for success.
No it hasn’t been plain sailing from the start. A lot of hard work, research and dedication has gone into the production of these wonderful cordials, with profits being ploughed back into the business, to help it grow.
As you can see, all the sweat has certainly paid off, with the company featuring on Dragon’s Den in 2013 (which is definitely not for the faint hearted). Some of their most notable customers include Sat Bains, Raymond Blanc, Galton Blackiston, Milsom Hotel Group, Selfridges, and Fortnum & Mason.
We’re very proud to have the chance to offer you such a lovely product, as part of our gift boxes.
